Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) (medically known as menorrhagia) refers to periods with unusually heavy bleeding or longer duration of bleeding.1 ‘Heavy’ means that your periods last longer than 7 days or that you lose more blood than usually lost during normal monthly periods.2

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) refers to any bleeding that is different from normal monthly periods1. Normal periods occur at an interval of 24 to 38 days, last for 2 to 7 days and result in a blood loss of 5 to 80 ml.2
